Current research of the Intelligent Systems (IS) department is concentrated on developing modern methods for analysis and sythesis of complex intelligent information and control systems based at dynamic ontologies, multiagent systems, softsensing.
Novel results are obtained in the domain of hybrid dynamic systems, behavior and dynamics of swarms, model predictive control based on intelligent agents. The department also has a traditional interest and results in developing formal logical and probabilistic methods for research of dynamically changing systems with network structures. Applied department elaborations are oriented towards information technologies for intelligent diagnostics and monitoring of industrial systems and ontologically based e-learning.

The Department is in close partnership with a series of Bulgarian universities like:

University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy (UCTM),

      Technical University-Sofia, branch Plovdiv (TU-PLOVDIV),

Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" (SU),

University of Library Studies and Information Technologies (ULSIT)

Small- and medium-size engineering enterprises "Start Engineering" JSCo, "Inovatiks" EOOD.

The Department is a founder and the main organizer of the prestigious international IEEE conference "Intelligent Systems" (2002, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016) and a leading organizer of two IFAC symposia - DECOM-TT Technology Transfer in Developing Countries (2004) and Energy Saving Control (2006).
